Recognizing great beauty in the everyday handicrafts used in daily life, Soetsu Yanagi, a philosophical thinker and advocator of the Mingei Movement, founded this museum in 1936. The museum collection boasts around 17,000 craft works, including ceramics, textiles, lacquer ware, paintings, metalwork, stonemasonry, braiding and more, crafted throughout the centuries. In addition to the fascinating exhibits, the two-story main building, with its wooden structure and lazuli tiled roof, has a unique character of its own and has been designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
思想家・柳宗悦が、日常的な暮らしの中で使われてきた手仕事の日用品の中に「用の美」を見出した「民藝運動」の本拠地として、1936年に開設された美術館。陶磁・染織・木漆工・絵画・金工・石工・編組など、古今東西の諸工芸品約17,000点が所蔵されています。木造瓦葺き2階建てからなる本館は、登録有形文化財として指定されており、建物と展示品の両方の趣を感じることができるでしょう。
