Shinjuku Donzoko

VenuesFood/DrinkCafe/BarRestaurant

Opened in 1951, Donzoko takes its name from the Japanese title of Russian writer Maxim Gorky’s play“The Lower Depths”, and is a Western-style izakaya that has been frequented by revered historical Japanese cultural icons such as Akira Kurosawa and Yukio Mishima. Its specialty Donzoko Cocktail, also known as “Donkaku”, is a sweet-tasting carbonated blend of lemon juice and gum syrup with shōchū. In this building whose exterior is covered in sprawling ivy, the dreams of the young revelers of decades past still hang heavy in the air.
