Situated near JR Nishi-Nippori station, Yanaka is a downtown area where old-fashioned buildings and cityscapes remain. Take a stroll through Yanaka Ginza, a street lined with small family-owned shops, to catch a glimpse of the traditional lifestyle. The area is refreshing for not only visitors from overseas but also for the locals. Let’s take a long walk around the area with wisut ponnimit, a manga and animation artist from Bangkok, Thailand, who is also a musician, and who is known affectionately in Japan as “Tam-kun” or simply “Tam”.

Tam: It’s very refreshing to ride a bike in Tokyo. Bangkok traffic is usually pretty intense, so there wasn’t a strong bicycle culture there until very recently. Now I see some serious riders in the city with fixies or racing bikes, which are becoming quite popular.

HAGISO

ฮากิโซะ

Tucked away from the main street of Yanakaginza is HAGISO, a culture complex comprised of a cafe, a gallery and an art space. This 58-year-old wooden building, which used to be an apartment called Hagiso, has been revamped into a spacious, comfortable venue.

Tam: I really love the cafe. I am sure that everyone comes here to rest or to put on a smile while eating nice food, just to feel good and relaxed. When I used to live in Kobe to study Japanese, I tried to find time to draw manga and turn it into books. I brought these to the cafe that I regularly went to and they were kind enough to sell them for me. It didn’t sell many, but the cafe owner and people who organized events purchased them and continued to support me. The wonderful thing about cafes is that they attract such a wide variety of people.

The representative of HAGISO is architect Mitsuyoshi Miyazaki. While attending Tokyo University of the Arts, he lived in the apartment building with other university mates. When the deteriorating apartment building was due to be demolished in 2012, Miyazaki decided to remodel it himself, so that at least the memories of the beloved building would remain. He organized an art event, Hagiennale, that attracted over 1,500 visitors during its three-week exhibition period. The owner of the building was so impressed by the exhibition that he decided not to demolish it. HAGISO now proudly stands as a cultural complex.

Tam: Just by looking at the visitors’ relaxed faces, I know that this is a good place to be. We don’t come to cafes just to eat. Cafes are like living creatures, just like human beings. Depending on what you wear or what you like to do, the people around you become different, right? I think maybe the relaxed vibe at HAGISO is more similar to Kansai (west Japan) than Tokyo. I love the sandwiches here, and the cream soda is fantastic.

Under the relentless glare of the summer heat, we visited Himitsudo, a shop that specializes in “kakigouri”, or shaved ice with flavored syrup. Himitsudo is one of the best-known spots in the Yanaka area. The all-natural ice is shaven by a traditional hand-cranked machine. The soft and fluffy icy dessert is topped with flavorful syrups made with the freshest fruits of the season, and you can add yogurt and cream to customize it the way you like.

From the 12 varieties of syrups always available, made by straining fruit, we ordered peach, honey-lemon, and blueberry yogurt.

Tam: I don’t mind standing in a long line for food if it’s for something interesting or delicious that I’ve seen in a magazine. There are many shaved-ice shops in Thailand, but this one is quite unique and super-delicious.

The shop doesn’t usually offer takeout, but they let us carry the icy treats to the nearby park, Okakura Tenshin Memorial Park. “I like to relax at a park, but I also enjoy watching people hang out,” said Tam while gazing at a person reading a book on a bench.

Let’s take a stroll down the market street of Yanaka Ginza. To catch the best view of the sunset, head down the famous staircase called Yuyake Dandan. The street is bustling with locals grocery shopping for dinner, as well as visitors holding their cameras and trying to capture the scenery.

Niku no Sato is a famous meat shop in Yanaka. Its most popular item, Yanaka Menchi, is a breaded and deep-fried ground meat cutlet that is beautifully spiced and juicy. Yanaka Menchi is available for takeout, and is a must-try snack.

Tam: It’s amazing to have so many things in one little street. Yanaka Menchi was delicious. Oh, hey, I want to try this too! (He picks up a skewer of grilled scallops.)

KIHARA komon is a select shop that offers a variety of goods from different regions in Japan. From teapots, cups, coffee mugs, plates and tealeaves, it has a unique selection of items related to Japanese tea. The shop also sells a wide range of Japanese confectioneries that go perfectly with a cup of fresh green tea.

คิฮาระโคะมง คือ ร้านคัดสรรที่มีสินค้าญี่ปุ่นหลากหลายจากภาคต่างๆ ของประเทศ ตั้งแต่กาน้ำชา ถ้วย เหยือกกาแฟ ไปจนถึงใบชา ร้านนี้ได้เลือกสินค้าเกี่ยวข้องชาญี่ปุ่นที่มีเอกลักษณ์โดดเด่น ที่ร้านยังขายขนมญี่ปุ่นหลากชนิดซึ่งเข้ากับชาเขียวสดสักถ้วยเป็นอย่างดี

You can enjoy both the old and the new in Yanaka. In this photo, Tam holds a modern version of a traditional type of Arita porcelain called “komon”, whose name refers to traditional Japanese patterns. In this collection, a type of pattern called “kisshou” is given a modern twist. We browsed the shop as we cooled down, and purchased some locally made soda in bottles with fresh graphic designs.

Lastly, we went to see Tsukiji-bei (Tsukiji Wall), built along the side of Kannon-ji Temple. The 2-meter-high wall is made with beautiful layers of “kawara” (Japanese roof tiles) and cement and stretches 37.6 meters wide.

Tsukiji-bei is a very precious cultural heritage whose history stretches back to the Edo Period (1603-1868.) In the olden days, this style of wall could be seen on the mansions of feudal lords, but it is extremely rare to see them remaining today. We have heard that a secret meeting by the 47 Ronin took place here. In 1992 the wall was made a city heritage by Taito Ward, and it is a beloved symbol in the area. Tam looks great on his bike against this very historic wall.

Tam uses Japanese slang words like “ikemen” (hunk) and “maji” (really) in conversation, and his unique and warm character made us feel very close to him. His art works make us feel the same way. We asked him what about Japan he finds the most inspiring.

In the “sakura” (cherry blossom) season, so many of my friends visit Japan and upload their photos of sakura on Instagram that it makes feel like everyone else is there except me. Thai people love Japan not only because the culture is interesting, but because we just like Japanese people in general. We consider Japanese people to have a good personality and cool facial features. Thai people usually visit very typical places like Harajuku or Shibuya when they go to Japan, but I really want to recommend places like Yanaka, with their real traditional lifestyles. I believe it’s good for both the visitors and the locals.
