Roppongi was once known as a hotspot where young people gather to party at night, but since the year 2000, Roppongi has become more of a versatile place. Major art museums like Mori Art Museum, The National Art Center and 21_21DESIGN SIGHT were built one after the other. Every year in March, these museums come together to host Roppongi Art Night, a citywide art festival where visitors wander around various parts of the area. One of the most trustworthy city guides in the world, Time Out Asia, came to tour the new Roppongi filled with art and design inspirations. The team of travelling experts from Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tel Aviv discovered several interesting places in Roppongi.

かつてはバーやクラブに多くの若者が集い、夜の街という印象の強かった六本木は、2000年代に入ってから新しい顔を持つようになりました。森美術館に国立新美術館、そして21_21DESIGN SIGHTなど、国内最大級の美術館が続々とオープン。毎年3月になるとそれらの美術館が手を結び、エリア回遊型のアートフェス『六本木アートナイト』を開催し、いまや六本木は「デザイン＆アートの街」として変化を遂げたのです。今回そんな六本木を歩くのは、世界中で信頼されるシティガイド「Time Out（タイムアウト）」のアジアチーム。Time Out編集部員といえば、都市の面白いところを見つけるプロフェッショナル。クアラルンプール、香港、シンガポール、テルアビブのTimeOut編集部メンバーが、エネルギッシュな六本木の今を巡ります。

Roppongi Hills is the symbol of the city. This building houses museums, movie theaters, and a number of public sculptures created by renowned contemporary artists of this era. Roppongi Hills triggered the creative output as the art hub of the city. The view from the top of this skyscraper is breathtaking. Tokyo City View lets you see the entire city in 360 degrees, and the view at night is mesmerizingly different from what you see during the day.

「六本木ヒルズ」は、いまやこの街のシンボルです。美術館や映画館、さらに現代美術作家のパブリックアートを敷地内に設置。六本木＝クリエイティブなエリアとしての土壌を築き上げてきました。 天空から眺める東京もまた格別。「東京シティビュー」では、360度の全方向から昼と夜で全く異なる街並を見ることができます。

One floor above the Tokyo City View is the Mori Art Museum. Located on the highest floor of the building, visitors can enjoy both the panoramic view of the city and also contemporary art. It is a popular spot for not only art fans but for many types of people.

東京シティビューからさらに1階のぼったところに、「森美術館」があります。超高層階に位置し、展望台と現代アートのどちらも楽しめるということで、美術ファンだけでなく観光客にも人気のスポットです。

Berwin：The museums in Singapore are quite big, but Mori Art Museum is massive and beautiful!

Berwin：シンガポールの美術館も大きいけど、森美術館もすごく大規模だし、綺麗だね！

Dor：Tel Aviv is smaller in comparison with Tokyo but we have contemporary museums and the art scene there is very active. I see many visitors here and that the Japanese art scene is very vibrant.

Dor：テルアビブは東京に比べるとすごく小さな街だけど、現代アートの美術館もあるし、アーティストも活発に活動しているんだ。ここも大勢の人が集まっていて、活気があるね。

After a long walk, have a rest here at a historic café called Fjord. Nestled between the quiet passages up on the hills of Keyakizaka Street, the historic brick walls will make you feel right at home. The recommended dish here is the Western-style curry rice cooked with Demi-glace sauce. It took more than six years to create this recipe of perfect rich brown sauce that goes with the curry. The Time Out team seemed very pleased with the selection.

ヒルズ内を歩き疲れたら静かなところでひとやすみ。「Fjord（フィヨルド）」は六本木ヒルズのけやき坂を上り詰めた、ひっそりとした一角に佇む老舗の喫茶店。レンガづくりの歴史を感じる店構えと、日本の古き良き喫茶店の風格を持つシックな店内でほっと一息つけるでしょう。 こちらのオススメは、6年の試行錯誤の末に完成したデミグラスソースがベースの欧風カレー。Time Outチームも気に入ったようです。

Mei：This is very tasty. We eat a lot of curry in Hong Kong. This restaurant has a very relaxing atmosphere.

Mei：おいしい！　カレーは香港でも良く食べるわ。このお店は落ち着いた雰囲気で居心地がいいわ

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT

21_21 Design Sight is an exhibition space built in the middle of the Tokyo Midtown Garden area. It was designed by Tadao Ando, one of the most famous Japanese architects of this era. One of the proposers for this facility was Issei Miyake, the international fashion designer, who continues to direct events at the gallery. Miyake collaborates with Taku Sato, a graphic designer, and Naoto Fukazawa, a product designer to decide unique exhibition lineups.

東京ミッドタウン・ガーデン内に建つデザインの展示施設。設計は日本を代表する建築家・安藤忠雄です。 本施設設立の発起人は、世界で活躍する衣服デザイナー・三宅一生。三宅のほか、ディレクターにグラフィックデザイナーの佐藤卓、プロダクトデザイナーの深澤直人を招き、今も三人でミュージアムの企画などについて話し合って決めているのだそう。デザイナーならではの企画の面白さには定評があります。

Berwin：It is interesting to see the collaboration between the designers and the exhibition space. It is unique that a fashion designer, a graphic designer and a product designer meet up monthly to come up with their artistic direction. The atmosphere is different from contemporary art galleries and it’s very refreshing.

Berwin：デザイナーとコラボレーションした展示施設の作り方というのはすごく興味深いね。衣服デザイナーとグラフィックデザイナー、プロダクトデザイナーが毎月会議して方針を決めているというのもユニークだし、現代アートのギャラリーとはまた異なる雰囲気で新鮮だよ。

The exhibition at that time was “KOME. The Art of Rice.” The most essential food for Japanese, rice was exhibited in various ways to stimulate visitors in all five senses.

この日に開催されていたのは企画展『コメ展』。日本人に欠かせない「コメ」を、五感を刺激するさまざまな仕掛けを使って紹介していました。

Mei：What an interesting space! The exhibition designs here are amazing and it’s very interactive. I’d love to bring friends here to visit again.

Mei：すごく面白い場所ね！　展示のデザインが可愛らしいし、体験できるスペースも多いから友人を連れてきたいわ。

After walking through the exhibition, how about a bite of Japanese sweets? Toraya is one of the most historic makers of Japanese confections called “Wagashi.” It was founded back in the early 16th century. In addition to the shop, there is a café and a gallery space in the Midtown outlet.

展示を観終わったら、おひとつ和菓子でもいかがでしょう？　「とらや」は室町時代後期に京都で生まれた、日本を代表する和菓子屋さん。東京ミッドタウン店にはショップに加え、喫茶、ギャラリーも併設されています。

Wagashi requires a very intricate technique. It is a type of sweets to enjoy visually as well as for its taste. The four distinctive seasons are well considered to be incorporated into the designs and the ingredients of this type of Japanese traditional confections.

繊細な技術で作られる、目で見て楽しく、口に入れておいしい日本の和菓子。四季がはっきりしている日本の風土を活かし、季節にちなんだモチーフを取り入れたお菓子づくりは日本ならでは。

Kaila：I love matcha and green tea and I order these a lot in the cafes in Hong Kong. These sweets here are especially tasty and they come on very beautiful plates.

Kaila：抹茶やグリーンティーは大好きで、香港でもよくカフェで頼んでいるわ。ここのお店のお菓子は器も素敵だし、全部おいしい！

Chee Wah：Kuala Lumpur has a very wide variety of food culture. From five star restaurants to the street food stalls, everyone loves to eat. Tokyo too has a very rich culture for food. Among all the traditional confections here, I love Sakura Mochi the best.

Chee Wah：クアラルンプールでは食文化がすごく盛んなんだ。星つきのレストランから屋台までたくさんのバリエーションがあって、みんな食べることが大好き。東京の食文化もすごく豊かだね。ここのお菓子の中では、桜餅が一番のお気に入りだよ。

Itay：The best thing in Tokyo including Roppongi is that there are a lot of apparel shops with very high quality garments. There are small boutiques run by local creators in Tel Aviv but they are not so advanced like here. I bought this shirt from RAGTAG.

Itay：六本木も含めて東京で一番すごいと思うのは、洋服のショップがたくさんあって、どこもクオリティーが高いこと。テルアビブには地元のクリエイターが作る小さなお店はあるんだけど、こんなに発達してはいないから。今着ているシャツは「RAGTAG」で買ったよ。

Chee Wah：It is my first time visiting Tokyo but as long as I have my smartphone, I am okay. The public transportation system here is very efficient. I wish there were more English signs!! (LOL!)

Chee Wah：東京に来るのは初めてだけど、スマートフォンがあれば苦労しないよ。すごく発達した交通網があるからね。あとは場所に英語の表記があれば完璧なんだけど！（笑）

Kaila：My father is Japanese but I don’t know much of the language. This is only my second time to visit Tokyo but I enjoy Tokyo a lot! My most favorite places are Omotesando Coffee and Daikanyama T-Site. I enjoyed 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT the most today. I feel different areas will give you different sensations in Tokyo so that I would love to visit more areas.

Kaila：私はお父さんが日本人だけど、日本語はほとんど喋れないし、日本に来たのも2回目。でも東京はすごく楽しい！　特にお気に入りなのは、表参道の「オモテサンドウコーヒー」、「代官山 蔦屋書店」かな。今日行った中だと、21_21 DESIGN SIGHTが一番面白かった！　東京は場所によって違う刺激があるから、もっといろいろな場所を訪ねてみたい。
