During the Taisho Era (1912–26), Japanese people often dreamed about ‘Gin-bura,’ or taking an enjoyable walk around Ginza. Even today, there is an air of elegance and sophistication in the glamorous streets. While maintaining its classy image, the city continues to renovate and update itself likewise with the changes in Japanese society. It requires courage and pride to have a business in Ginza, and the cityscape manifests such bravery. We strolled around Ginza with MEG to visit three locations that represent the traditional beauty and the freshness of the city. We highly recommend these three spots for those who wish to explore the refined side of Japanese culture. So here the journey begins.

大正時代、銀座の街を歩いて楽しむことは、「銀ブラ」と呼ばれ、日本人の憧れでした。今でもこの街には、背筋がすっと伸びるような特別な空気が流れています。そのワケは、歴史を大切にしながらも、時代の流れとともに大胆にアップデートする街ぐるみのセンスにアリ。しかも、どのお店からも「銀座に店を構えている」ことへの自負が伝わってくるのです。今回はそんな銀座の街を、日本とフランスで独自のファッションセンスを開花させる、MEGさんがお散歩。老舗ながらも、フレッシュさが感じられる「ザ・銀座」な3つのスポットは、日本文化を粋に楽しみたい人にオススメです。ワクワクの発見を求め、いざ銀ブラ！

KABUKIZA

KABUKIZA has been renovated and it reopened to the pubic in April 2013. Since its establishment in 1889, this is the forth time for the historic building to have undergone renovation. One of the top Japanese architects of today, Kengo Kuma took charge of its dynamic design. The impressive ‘kara hafu’ gable, or sloping roof, is a distinctive style of KABUKIZA that has been passed down from the beginning.

2013年4月にリニューアルした歌舞伎座。1889年に誕生してから、4度目となるお色直しは、日本を代表する建築家・隈研吾が設計。唐破風の大屋根がかかる堂々とした姿は、時代を経ても変わらず受け継がれています。

There are new areas in the theater that you can visit without having to purchase a ticket for a show, such as the gallery and the roof garden. Go up to the 4th floor corridor to have a closer look at the tiled roof, or take a peek at Kabuki culture in the gallery. As a performer, MEG is familiar with many theaters around Japan and abroad, but she found KABUKIZA quite refreshing and inspirational.

今回のリニューアルの見どころの1つは、観劇者以外でも見学できる、ギャラリーや屋上庭園。4階の回廊スペースから瓦屋根を間近で眺めたり、ギャラリーで歌舞伎の世界観に触れたり……。国内外でさまざまなライブ会場をまわっているMEGさんにも新鮮な体験だったようです。

MEG：It was my first time ever to enter the KABUKIZA building. The designs for the little props used in Kabuki are very cool to look at. You can try on the Kabuki costumes to take a photograph and I thought my friends from overseas would really enjoy this. It feels so comfortable to be here so next time, I will definitely watch a Kabuki show and enjoy matcha green tea at the café after.

MEG：実は、歌舞伎座の中に入るのは初めてなんです。歌舞伎に使われている小物って、今見てもデザインがクールなんですね。舞台のセットを体験できたり、歌舞伎の衣裳を着て写真を撮ることもできるから、海外からの友人を連れてきたら喜びそうだなと思いました。居心地もいいし、今度は歌舞伎を観て、喫茶室でゆっくり抹茶を味わいたいな。

Chuo Dori is the main street of Ginza. Stop by a gallery space in the basement of the brick-colored Shiseido building. The gallery, which is free to enter, is known for exhibiting the most up-and-coming artists. Shiseido, one of the most famous and popular Japanese cosmetic brands, originally established its business as a Western-style pharmacy in Ginza in 1872. In 1919, they created their first exhibition area in the shop and it gradually transformed itself into the current gallery. Their long history for supporting art culture is truly a part of Ginza heritage.

銀座の中央通りは、一番の目抜き通り。是非立ち寄りたいのが、煉瓦色が目印の資生堂ビル地下にある、入場無料のギャラリースペース。新鋭アーティストをいち早く紹介しているアートスポットです。そもそも日本を代表する化粧品ブランドである資生堂は、1872年に洋風調剤薬局として銀座に創業。1919年にはすでに店内に展示スペースを作り、それがギャラリーへと成長していったというから、銀座文化の一端を担ってきたといっても過言ではありません。

MEG：The high ceiling makes the space so luxurious even though it is in the basement. I’m surprised to find a place of tranquility that makes me feel so relaxed in Ginza.

MEG：地下なのに、天井が高くて贅沢な空間ですね。銀座に、こんなに時間がゆっくり流れてほっとできる場所があるなんて驚きです！

Today, there are many fans of Japanese stationery around the world. Established in 1904, ITOYA is a historic stationery shop. Just looking at the wide variety of stationery will give you inspiration.MEG says, “I come here every year to get a new schedule book.”

今や、世界中にファンがいる日本の文房具。中でも伊東屋は、1904年に生まれた老舗の文房具専門店で、ありとあらゆる文房具が並ぶ店内は、眺めているだけでも楽しめます。MEGさんも、「手帳を新調するときには毎年ココって決めてるんです！」とのこと。

We visited K.ITOYA, the annex of the shop. There we found carefully selected and beautifully designed fountain pens, globes, and frames, which will add a sophisticated touch to your home decor. It almost feels like an art museum here.

今回訪れたのは、「大人の隠れ家」をコンセプトにした別館「K.ITOYA」。万年筆や地球儀、額縁など、クリエイティブな暮らしを提案してくれるアイテムが並び、まるで美術館のような空間です。

MEG：They have color pencils with 150 different colors available, all slightly different from one another. I feel the creativity of the people who came up with these colors. I also found a tiny photo frame that I have been looking for in the basement. It will be up on my wall!

MEG：微妙な色違いの色鉛筆が最大で150色も揃ってるんですね！　開発する人の工夫を垣間見ることができて面白いです。地下の額装コーナーでは、まさに探していた、小さなフォトフレームを見つけました。家に飾ろっと。

MEG took a walk from Higashi Ginza, the eastern part of Ginza to Chuo Dori, which is the best route of ‘Gin-bura.’ As she walked around the city, she says the best part of the area is the wide variety of options.

東銀座から銀座の中央通まで、まさに王道の銀ブラコースを楽しんだMEGさん。東京を代表する街を歩きながら、この都市の魅力は「選択肢の多さ」だと話してくれました。

MEG：“Just like choosing one color out of the wall full of color pencils, you can pick your favorite shop or product, food to eat, place to work at, or transportation to take, out of the many possibilities in Tokyo. Falling in love with Tokyo depends on the choices you make while spending time in the city. The places I went today are different from where I used to visit in Ginza. It made me realize there are many options in the city that I have yet to discover. I also ended up buying so many things! Tokyo is also a fun place to see a mixture of different cultures. The word "Kawaii" has different definitions, like "Kawaii" in Harajuku is different from Shibuya or Akihabara. I think the difference is also a way to enjoy the variety of options in Tokyo.

MEG：例えば今日、たくさんの色鉛筆の中から気に入った一本を選んだように、お店や商品、食事、職業、交通手段、何をとっても多くの中から選べるのが東京。そんな東京を好きだと感じるかどうかは、何を選んで過ごすかによって変わってくると思います。今日歩いた銀座も、今まで私が歩いていた銀座とは違うし、いつもの街にもまだまだ知らない選択肢があることを実感できました。だから、今日もたくさんお買い物しちゃいましたし（笑）。それに東京は文化のミックスが面白い街。例えば、原宿の「カワイイ」と渋谷の「カワイイ」と秋葉原の「カワイイ」は、使われる場所によって意味合いが違ってきますよね。そんな違いも、選択肢の広さだと捉えて楽しめるのがこの街なんじゃないでしょうか。
